ECCAR General Conference CommunicAction –Together to protect human rights at the local level

The European Coalition of Cities Against Racism (ECCAR) and the City of Bologna are glad to announce the  2020 ECCAR General Conference that will take place on 19 and 20 November online.

Many people living in European cities face racism and discrimination, while everyone should be able to enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms. Discriminatory behaviours are not only voluntary acts; they can be embedded in all institutions, thus influencing policy-making and affecting the life of people by limiting access to jobs, healthcare, housing, financing or education.  Cities, as the level of government that is closer to citizens, cannot ignore this and need to act with courage, concrete measures and policies to ensure equal opportunities and participation in societies.

This year’s Conference brings together a wide spectrum of perspectives – European institutions, international organisations, activists, cities and their networks, media and young generations – with the aim to promote the strengthening of a human rights culture and to highlight the role of local authorities in the field of education, youth and communication in shaping inclusive cities.

All the panels will be accessible online, and will be structured as plenary sessions which will be open to everyone and aim to inform, inspire and reflect, and as three parallel working groups with a more interactive format to let local authorities and other stakeholders share good practices and experiences and produce concrete recommendations for ECCAR’s action and follow-up. The working groups will focus on Islamophobia, access to housing and new narratives.

The Conference will be held in English and Italian, with simultaneous translation.
