Rathaus am Marktplatz
76124 Karlsruhe
Germany
Karlsruhe lies within the climatically favoured South-West of Germany. Founded in 1715 as a planned city of the Baroque era in a fan-shaped layout, today, the city has more than 300,000 inhabitants.
Karlsruhe is almost a by-word for tolerance and progress. It was here that Germany’s first parliamentary building was erected in 1822 and in the 19th and 20th centuries, the city was a hub for Women’s emancipation and environmentalist movements in Germany. It is therefore not surprising that Karlsruhe is also known as the “seat of justice“. After World War II, Germany’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, and the Supreme Court were established in Karlsruhe. Great importance is also attached to its status as a city of basic law and human rights. Since 2007, Karlsruhe is a member of ECCAR and participates in the Steering Committee. In 2015, the 7th ECCAR General Conference was held in Karlsruhe.
30% of Karlsruhe’s residents are non-Germans or Germans with a migration background (Data from 2015). Main countries of origin are Turkey, Romania, Italy and Syria. As no group of migrants predominates and a good level of understanding exists between communities, fortunately, there are no “migrant ghettos” or racism-related incidents in Karlsruhe.
Karlsruhe is one of the best cities to live in Germany and one of the most important IT locations within the European Union.
