The city, located in the southwest of Belgium, is home to 76,917 people, of whom 14,476 have their roots outside the Belgian borders. To do justice to this diversity, the city is committed to the promotion of inclusion. Already in 2019, Korttijk decided to rename their streets that remind of his Belgian colonial past. Furthermore they engaged at the international Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia and have internal and external networks for diversity. To take structural action against racism the City has an Intercultural Society Council (RIS) which is the council for all citizens, self-organizations and the professional field that are active in Kortrijk and its sub-municipalities on the integration of citizens with a migration background and the minority policy.
