The island of Lampedusa, just 22 square kilometers in the heart of the Mediterranean, is the southernmost strip of land in Europe. It is known for its crystalline sea and for its beaches, which every year attract a flow of tourists capable of bringing the island from its 6,500 residents up to over 30,000 people in the summer months.
Lampedusa is renowned for its humanitarian commitment as it is the landing place for most of the boats of migrants who intend to reach Italy, and therefore Europe, from the coasts of North Africa. Even in the most complex situations and in the heaviest emergencies, its Community has never failed in its vocation to welcome people. Especially in summertime when the sea is calm and the climate is warm, landings are practically continuous. From June 1 to November 18, 2020, 19,975 migrants landed in Lampedusa. It is not always easy to make the two "souls" of Lampedusa live together, the humanitarian one and the tourist one, but our Community will continue doing so.
Lampedusa intends to develop a process, made of awareness raising actions and international interactions to make it possible to talk about Peace again from the heart of the Mediterranean. If we jointly succeed in making even one more step towards a society that can say “No" to Racism and “Yes" to Peace, we will have accomplished an extraordinary achievement.
