The ECCAR Award - Celebrating Local Efforts against Racism on a European Level
What is the ECCAR Award?
ECCAR strives to transform cities into safe and inclusive spaces for all citizens by implementing the 10 Points Action Plan, which provides a framework for cities to integrate anti-racism strategies into their actions and programmes. In its 20th anniversary year, ECCAR would like to highlight the specific measures taken by its member municipalities with the ECCAR Award. The ECCAR award presents a new opportunity to celebrate your municipality's exemplary efforts and spotlight a specific action toward building inclusive and anti-racist cities.
Why should my city apply?
- To spotlight an exemplary local action in combating racism in your city.
- To inspire other cities to build inclusive and anti-racist communities across Europe.
- To gain international visibility and recognition by ECCAR and its Scientific Advisory Board, including UNESCO.
- To increase the visibility of your city’s ECCAR membership by co-organising an award ceremony at your municipality with an ECCAR representative.
- To receive a physical award that will be a permanent symbol within your city for your exemplary local action.
- To obtain 2500 Euros to fund an activity in your city, e.g., training, team building day, event, etc.
Selection Process
The 2 winning cities will be selected in 3 phases. In the first round, the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) will preselect candidates based on the criteria for good practices of the ECCAR Online City Reporting. In the next step, the ECCAR Board and the ECCAR Office will choose three finalists per category. The finalists will present their submitted actions on-site on the final day of the ECCAR General Conference in Heidelberg, Germany (September 23-25, 2024). The presentations are followed by a vote for one winning city per category by the members of the ECCAR General Assembly on-site. See below for instructions for the application.
How can my city apply?
The ECCAR Office will facilitate online applications aligned with Level 2 standards of the ECCAR Online City Reporting through the survey tool QuestionPro. You can submit a specific local measure for the award application in the application form. It is important that the measures are not one-off events. The application form will be available in English, German, and French. If you can not apply in one of these languages, please contact the ECCAR Office. See the PDF Versions of the questions for the application below.
If you want to hand in a measure that you already reported in this year's Reporting Round, you can directly copy-paste your answers from your report to the survey tool QuestionPro or send us your report as a PDF. If you have problems using the survey tool QuestionPro, please reach out to the ECCAR Office to find a solution.

During the annual General Assembly, the preselected candidates will again present their local actions, and the ECCAR member cities will vote for the winning city. More information on the process will follow at the beginning of the reporting round in 2025.
