Located in the Province of Liège, in the Walloon Region, the City of Verviers lies strategically between Liège, Germany and the Netherlands. It sits at the heart of a region rich in diverse landscapes, at the gateway to the Hautes Fagnes and the Ardennes, and enjoys a remarkable natural setting through which the River Vesdre flows.

A city with a distinguished industrial history
Verviers developed from the 18th century onwards as a major European centre for the wool industry. Thanks to the quality of its water, essential for wool processing, the city experienced rapid industrial and urban growth, leaving an architectural and industrial heritage that is still visible today.

A city undergoing transformation and looking to the future
Following the economic changes of the 20th century, Verviers has been engaged for several years in a process of urban, economic and social renewal. The City is leading ambitious projects in the areas of:

  • neighbourhood regeneration,
  • ecological transition,
  • sustainable mobility,
  • social innovation,
  • economic and tourist appeal.

A hub for services and community life
Verviers plays a central role in the east of the province of Liège thanks to its diverse range of:

  • public and administrative services,
  • education and training,
  • health and social care,
  • culture, sport and leisure.

A people-centred and inclusive city
With its rich cultural and social diversity, Verviers stands out for its commitment to community life, solidarity and citizen participation. Local policies aim to strengthen social cohesion and ensure services are accessible to all.
