Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden. It is a port city with a strategic location between Copenhagen and Oslo on the West Coast. By 2019 the city had 580 000 inhabitants, out of which 27% of the people living in the city was born outside of Sweden. 

Gothenburg’s biggest employer is the City of Gothenburg authority. The City employs more than 55,000 people working in over 100 different professions. Our job is to create equal opportunities for a good life for all the city’s residents and to develop Gothenburg for the future. 

The City of Gothenburg became a member of ECCAR in November 2019 and our membership in the network is expected to contribute at various levels to working consciously, systematically, and effectively to counter all forms of racism and discrimination. In February 2020 the City Council adopted the Gothenburg City plan for actions against racism 2020-2023. The plan focuses on the steps ahead where the city needs to strengthen its work on  

• countering racism by highlighting inequalities and clarifying responsibilities 
• including and interacting with minorities at risk
• reflecting on limiting norms and exclusionary structures 
• acting consistently when racism occurs
